Learning outcomes • Design a chart of accounts from business requirements — gathering the right information, making the right trade-offs, and documenting your decisions in a way that survives project handover • Design multi-entity CoA structures for African organisations with different local GAAP requirements, multiple currencies, and intercompany relationships • Write cross-validation rules that protect data integrity without creating a configuration maintenance burden • Identify the CoA decisions that cannot be easily reversed post-go-live and explain their implications to a client before commitment • Diagnose CoA design problems on existing implementations and recommend remediation approaches that can be implemented post-go-live • Conduct a structured CoA design review on your own or a colleague's implementation using the course's review checklist Prerequisites • Working knowledge of Oracle Fusion Finance navigation and basic GL concepts (accounts payable, receivable, general ledger) • Understanding of basic accounting principles — debits, credits, trial balance, financial statements • At least one full Oracle Fusion Finance implementation or six months of hands-on configuration experience is strongly recommended Modules 1. CoA fundamentals and segment strategy (3 hours · Foundation session) We begin with what a chart of accounts actually is in Oracle Fusion — not the accounting textbook definition, but the technical reality: a structure of segments, each with a value set, that together define every account combination in the system. We work through the five standard segments (Company, Cost Centre, Account, Intercompany, Future), when to use each, and when to deviate. We cover the critical decision of natural account structure — how deep to go, what level of granularity is useful versus painful, and how to design for the reporting the business actually needs rather than the reporting it thinks it wants. We end with a structured framework for gathering CoA requirements from a client that has never thought about their CoA before. Multi-entity design, cross-validation rules, and account hierarchies (3 hours · Core design session) The second session tackles the hardest design problems: multi-entity and multi-country structures. How do you design a single CoA that works for a Mauritius holding company, a Tanzanian operating subsidiary, and a Moroccan distribution entity — each with different local GAAP requirements, different chart structures, and different reporting needs? We work through the options: single CoA with subsidiary segments, multiple CoA structures, and ledger set design. We then move into cross-validation rules — the rules that prevent invalid account combinations from being entered. Done well, cross-validation protects data integrity and reduces errors. Done badly, it creates a maintenance nightmare. We cover both, with live examples of rules that cause problems and how to rewrite them. We finish with account hierarchies: how to structure them for OTBI reporting, financial statement generation, and budget consolidation. Configuration walkthrough and the decisions that can't be undone (3 hours · Hands-on configuration session) This session is practical. We walk through the full CoA configuration sequence in Oracle Fusion — from creating the value sets, to defining segment labels, to completing the chart of accounts structure, to testing account combinations. More importantly, we identify the decisions that are very difficult or impossible to reverse once the system is live: segment length, the number of segments, segment label assignment, and the ledger currency. We cover migration considerations — how to bring a CoA from an existing system (EBS, NetSuite, or a legacy finance system) into Fusion without inheriting its design problems. We end with a CoA design review checklist that participants can use on their own engagements. Real-world case studies, remediation, and Q&A (3 hours · Case study and application session) The final session works through three real-world case studies drawn from actual implementations — with the identifying details changed. Each case presents a CoA design problem, the decision that was made, and what happened. Participants work through the cases in pairs, identifying the design flaw, proposing a remediation, and presenting their recommendation. We then cover the most common post-go-live CoA issues and how to address them: adding new segments, revaluing accounts, dealing with a CoA that was too shallow for current reporting needs, and managing a CoA that was designed for a business that has since changed. The session ends with an open Q&A where participants can bring real CoA design challenges from their own projects. Changing segment structures post-go-live requires re-mapping historical data, rebuilding financial reports, and re-testing integrations. The cost of a bad CoA decision compounds over time. This course is designed to prevent that — before it happens.
