Overview
Fixed assets is often treated as a simple module — load the assets, set up depreciation, let it run. In practice, getting fixed assets right requires careful decisions about asset book structure, depreciation method selection, asset category design, and the integration with Payables and Projects that brings assets into the system correctly. Organisations that configure fixed assets without understanding these decisions end up with depreciation that does not match their accounting policy, capital assets sitting in expense accounts, and tax books that produce incorrect deferred tax calculations.
This course covers Oracle Fusion Fixed Assets configuration at the level required for a complete and correct implementation. Asset book design — corporate books and tax books — and the decisions that make them work together for both financial reporting and tax compliance. Depreciation method configuration: straight-line, declining balance, units of production, and the IFRS-specific methods used by African organisations reporting under international standards. Asset category setup: how categories drive the default depreciation rules and GL account assignments for every asset. And the two integrations that matter most: how Payables creates mass additions from capital purchase invoices, and how Oracle Projects capitalises project costs into fixed assets.
Mauritius and the East African region have specific fixed assets regulatory requirements: deferred tax accounting under IAS 12, the capital allowances structure for Mauritius income tax, and revaluation accounting under IAS 16 for organisations that carry assets at fair value. This course addresses all three.
Learning outcomes
• Design an Oracle Fusion Fixed Assets book structure — corporate and tax books — appropriate for an organisation's financial reporting and tax compliance requirements
• Configure depreciation methods for straight-line, declining balance, and IAS 16 revaluation under IFRS
• Design an asset category structure that correctly assigns GL accounts and default depreciation rules for each asset class
• Configure the Payables-to-Fixed Assets mass additions integration and process pending assets from capital purchase invoices
• Set up Oracle Fusion Projects capitalisation to transfer project costs into Fixed Assets as completed assets
• Process the full asset lifecycle — addition, adjustment, transfer, and retirement — and explain the accounting entries at each stage
Prerequisites
• Working knowledge of Oracle Fusion Finance — Payables, GL, and the subledger accounting framework
• Basic understanding of fixed assets accounting — what depreciation is, what an asset book is, what capital vs expense means
• Completion of Subledger Accounting Rules is helpful for understanding how FA accounting entries are generated
Modules
1. Asset book design, depreciation methods, and asset categories (3 hours)
We begin with Oracle Fusion Fixed Assets architecture: the asset book — the central container for asset records, depreciation rules, and accounting definitions. We cover corporate books (for financial reporting) and tax books (for tax compliance and deferred tax), the relationship between them, and why most organisations need both. We work through depreciation method configuration: straight-line with various useful life conventions, declining balance, units of production for assets where consumption drives depreciation, and the amortised cost vs revaluation model under IAS 16. We cover the IFRS impairment review process and how Oracle Fusion supports IAS 36 impairment testing. The session ends with asset category setup: how categories provide the default depreciation rules and GL account derivation for every asset added to the system, and how to design a category structure that is granular enough for asset management but not so granular that it creates a maintenance burden.

2. Mass additions from Payables, project capitalisation, and asset lifecycle (3 hours)
The most important integration in Fixed Assets is the Payables-to-FA mass additions flow: how a capital purchase invoice in Oracle Payables creates a pending asset in Oracle Fixed Assets, how the mass additions process converts those pending assets into active asset records, and what the accounting entries look like at every step. We cover the configuration required on the Payables side — the asset-tracking attributes on invoice lines — and on the Fixed Assets side — the mass additions source, the default category assignment, and the capitalisation threshold. We then cover project capitalisation: how Oracle Fusion Projects transfers capitalised project costs into Fixed Assets, creating assets whose cost comprises multiple project expenditure lines. We end with the asset lifecycle: additions, adjustments, transfers between cost centres and locations, reinstatements, and the full and partial retirement entries that close out an asset at the end of its useful life.
