Period-End Close for Controllers

About this course

The complete month-end sequence in Oracle Fusion Finance. The complete Oracle Fusion Finance period-end close sequence — subledger close, journal entries, reconciliation, financial statements, and period lock. For finance controllers. 6 hrs · 2 sessions. Overview Month-end close is where the quality of a Fusion Finance implementation becomes visible. A well-configured system closes cleanly: subledgers balance to the GL, accrual journals post correctly, financial statements tie on the first run. A poorly operated system turns close into a weeks-long investigation. The difference is almost always process knowledge — knowing what needs to happen, in what sequence, and how to identify and fix what is not working. This course teaches the Oracle Fusion Finance period-end close from the perspective of the controller who owns it — not the consultant who configured it. We work through the full close sequence: subledger accounting sweep and close, accrual journal entries, intercompany reconciliation, balance sheet reconciliation, and the period locking sequence that prevents backdated postings. We cover the financial statements available directly in Fusion and how to produce them without a separate reporting tool. Every controller who has recently moved to Fusion from EBS, a legacy system, or a spreadsheet-based close process will recognise the challenges we address: understanding why a subledger does not balance to the GL, how to investigate an unexplained variance, and how to close a period when one account is still being disputed. Learning outcomes • Execute the complete Oracle Fusion Finance period-end close sequence from subledger sweep through period lock • Reconcile each subledger — AP, AR, fixed assets — to the corresponding GL account and identify the source of any discrepancy • Create, approve, post, and reverse accrual journal entries in Oracle Fusion GL • Produce a trial balance, income statement, and balance sheet directly from Oracle Fusion without requiring a separate reporting tool • Manage the period lock sequence across subledgers and the GL, including handling late journals after lock • Reconcile intercompany balances across legal entities and identify the cause of imbalances Prerequisites • Completion of AP & AR Day-to-Day Operations, or at least one month of operating AP/AR in Fusion • Working knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping — debits, credits, trial balance • Familiarity with what a period-end close involves Modules 1. Subledger close, accruals, and journal entries (3 hours) The subledger accounting sweep — transferring entries from AP, AR, fixed assets, and inventory subledgers into the GL. How to monitor the sweep, reconcile each subledger to its GL account, and close the subledger. Manual journal entries: accruals for uninvoiced expenses, prepayments, and recurring journals. Journal approval workflow, posting, and reversal. Subledger reconciliation exercise: identifying a five-item discrepancy between AP subledger and GL. Topics: Subledger accounting sweep; GL to subledger reconciliation; Accrual journal entries; Prepayment and amortisation; Recurring journals; Journal approval and posting 2. Intercompany reconciliation, financial statements, and period lock (3 hours) Intercompany reconciliation: confirming that intercompany receivables and payables balance between legal entities, and how Oracle Fusion's intercompany framework automates the balancing entries. Financial statement generation in Fusion: trial balance, income statement, and balance sheet without exporting to Excel. Segment value security and access controls. Period lock sequence across subledgers and the GL, governance around period locking, and handling late journals. Topics: Intercompany balance reconciliation; Fusion financial statements; Trial balance and drilling; Segment value security; Period lock sequence; Late journals and adjustments Delivery Optimally delivered in the week before a team's first live period-end close, so concepts are immediately applied to real data. Can be combined with AP & AR Day-to-Day Operations as a two-day Finance Operations programme. Available virtually and on-site.
